The Gift of Love at the End-of-Life

Everyone loves gifts, right!?! When you think of end-of-life decision making and planning, you typically do not think of gifts, but it can be the biggest gift of love and comfort that you provide for your family and friends. End-of-life planning can look different to each person; it is unique to one’s personal belief and value system and culture. The most important aspect of planning for end-of-life is ensuring that your friends/family understand and are aware of your wishes and desires before these decisions have to be made.

Many times family members and friends relay stories to hospice staff about how glad they were that their loved one planned for, and wrote down, their wishes for the end-of-life decisions that must be made. These decisions can be very difficult to make, especially if the wishes and desires of the individual are unknown. Providing this information to your loved ones can alleviate feelings of uncertainty and guilt and lead to less complicated grief after death.

There are many resources available to help you plan for end-of-life decision making. They include:

  • Directives to Physician and Family

  • Medical Power of Attorney

  • Out of Hospital DNR

  • Durable Power of Attorney
